EV Buying Guide

Electric cars have gone mainstream, and for many Los Angeles drivers they now make complete sense. Quiet, quick and cheap to run, an EV can transform your daily commute — but only if it suits how you actually drive and where you can charge. This guide walks through the questions worth answering before you switch.

Start with range and your real routine

Range anxiety fades fast once you look at your genuine driving habits rather than worst-case road trips. Most people drive far less each day than they imagine, and modern EVs cover 200 to 300 miles on a charge.

  • Add up a typical week — commute, errands and the school run. If it comfortably fits inside the car's range, you'll rarely think about charging.
  • Plan for the occasional long trip — check that fast-chargers sit along the routes you take a few times a year.
  • Remember range varies — freeway speeds, air-conditioning and hills all use more energy, so treat the headline figure as a best case.

Sort out charging first

Where and how you charge matters more than almost anything else. The happiest EV owners can charge at home or at work and simply plug in overnight, waking up to a full battery.

  • Home charging is cheapest and most convenient if you have a driveway or garage for a wall charger.
  • Workplace or public charging can work well if home charging isn't an option, especially with fast-chargers nearby.
  • Fast (DC) charging tops up most of the battery in well under an hour, which is ideal for longer journeys.
The honest test

If you can reliably charge overnight at home or at work, an EV is likely to be a joy. If you can't charge easily yet, a hybrid may serve you better for now — there is no shame in easing in.

Weigh the running costs and the drive

Electricity usually costs less per mile than fuel, and with fewer moving parts, EVs tend to need simpler servicing. Many California drivers also value HOV-lane access and local incentives. Set against that, the purchase price can be higher, so it pays to look at the total cost over the years you plan to keep the car rather than the sticker alone.

Finally, take one for a proper test drive. The instant, silent acceleration and smooth, one-pedal feel win a lot of people over on the spot. An EV is a genuinely different experience — and once the range and charging questions are settled, it is often an easy car to love.
